Private Sleep & Respiratory physicians and clinics  

Sleep & respiratory physicians are doctors who have specialist training in sleep medicine. They are qualified to diagnose and treat sleep apnea as well as other sleep disorders.

Some physicians work solo but most work within a clinic – either within a private hospital or in a stand-alone clinic. Many have the support of allied health clinicians, like psychologists, as well as technical assistance from sleep scientists. 

Public Sleep & Respiratory services

All capital cities and many regional centres have sleep clinics as part of the state’s public hospital system. These are overseen by Sleep & Respiratory physicians and are staffed by doctors who are training in sleep medicine as well as nurses, scientists, and other allied health professionals. 

Like any public health service, there can be long waiting times.

Dentists

One of the recognised treatments for sleep apnea is mandibular advancement splints (often referred to as ‘oral appliances’). These are most commonly fitted by dentists,  meaning that some dentists and dental clinics specialise in sleep apnea. 

Not all dentists have an interest in, or knowledge about sleep apnea and oral appliances, so you’ll need to search for one near you with this expertise.
